Ants and cockroaches are serious pests that can infest your home and garden. Getting rid of ants and cockroaches can seem like a never-ending task. Here are some things you can do to eliminate these common pests from your home and garden and keep them out:  

Bait Them:  You can make an effective bait that will attract and kill ants and cockroaches by mixing equal parts confectioners sugar with baking soda. Mix these ingredients well and place the mixture into bowls, flower pots, or empty plastic containers. Set these bait containers behind your appliances, inside of kitchen and bathroom cupboards, on your patio, in your garage, and everywhere you have seen ants and cockroaches or suspect that they may live. Next to these containers, set out a shallow bowl of water. The ants and cockroaches will be attracted by the smell of the sugar and will eat the bait. When they drink water, the baking soda will expand and form a gas that will kill them. Other ants and cockroaches will then eat the dead insects and also be killed by the bait.  

Set Glue Traps:  Glue traps can be placed indoors and outdoors to trap and hold ants and cockroaches. You can put some of the sugar and baking soda bait near the glue trap with the glue trap on a direct pathway to the bait. When the ants and cockroaches enter the glue traps, they become trapped by the glue and die. Insect glue traps are available at hardware stores. 

Prevent Them From Entering:  Another method of eliminating ants and cockroaches is to prevent them from entering your home. To do this, you must seal all of the cracks and holes that you can find where they can enter. You can seal these entryways with painter's putty that is available at hardware stores that sell painting supplies. Seal up any cracks that you see between your walls and your floors, windows, and doors. Many homes and apartments have openings in their walls and cupboards where kitchen and bathroom plumbing is installed. These are very common entryways for ants and roaches. Some of these entryways can be large and you may need to close these holes by applying putty in 2 - 3 applications until the entire hole is sealed. Allow the putty to completely dry between repeated applications. 

Exterminate Them:  The most effective long-term solution to rid your home of ants and cockroaches is to have them professionally exterminated. An insect extermination company can spray the exterior of your home to keep insects from entering. They can also spray the interior of your home wherever they suspect that these pests are living or entering. Choose an extermination company that will make multiple visits to your home over a period of weeks or months to make sure that you no longer have a pest problem. 

You can successfully eliminate ants and cockroaches from your home with bait, traps, shutting them out, and having them exterminated. To keep these pests from returning, keep a clean home and always keep food in sealed containers. Keep your stove and cupboards spotlessly clean by cleaning up spills, sweeping up crumbs, and wiping any food residue from your counters, shelves, and appliances. Soon you will not see any more ants and cockroaches in or around your home and garden.
