Different species of ants behave differently so finding out which type is in your home is the first step to eradication. Knowing what species is invading your home will provide a lot of useful information, such as preferred nesting spots, nesting habits, and favorite food(s). For instance, you may have heard that if you just manage to kill the queen ant then the whole colony will die. But some ant species can have multiple queens in a single colony and they might not all be in the same area. Killing off just one or two of the queens for these types of colonies will do little to nothing to impact the swarms entering your home.

Use poisoned bait: The ants that you see in your home are only a fraction of the colony as a whole. The ant colony survives by sending out a few workers to collect food for the entire nest. This food is then shared with the whole colony, including any queens. As a result, one of the best methods for ant control and eradication is the use of poisoned baits. Your exterminator can help you to determine what type of bait the ants are going to be most likely to eat and what poison will kill the ants as quickly as possible without killing the worker ants before they can return to the nest.

Residual poisons: Residual poisons, such as can be found in a can of insecticide that you get at the local grocery or hardware store, can also be helpful in your quest for ant control. Although many insecticides should never be used near where food is stored, your exterminator may have an option that can be used in and around your cabinets without having to worry about whether you and your family are safe. Never spray a store-bought insecticide around food; always get professional help.
